The arena is perhaps the most important part of the Colosseum, where games, battles and shows took place. In addition to gladiator fights, in fact, death sentences were carried out in the arena, representations of hunting scenes with ferocious animals and naval battles, with the arena being flooded to reproduce a small lake where boats could be turned.
Elliptical in shape and measuring 76 x 46 meters, the arena consisted of a wooden plank covered with sand with various traps and hoists that communicated with the basement and could be used during games.
The arena was accessed from the two entrances located at the major axis, the west access, towards the Forum, was used for the entry of the gladiators while, from the opposite side, the lifeless bodies of the combatants were brought out.
